Idris Elba, 46 years-old, is everywhere. You probably know him for starring in pretty great movies and TV shows such as 2013’s Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom or the timeless 00’s HBO series The Wire, or, in a more recent matter, for being strongly associated with the James Bond saga, as rumors said he could be the first black man to play the iconic Ian Fleming’s character in the big screen.
However, it is common knowledge that Mr. Elba does not confine himself to his acting skills only. Besides acting, the man is a R&B artist (listen to his 2011 song “Private Garden” here), a professional kickboxer (with a 1-0 career record), and finally, a highly-regarded DJ and producer from UK’s garage scene, that already performed at Glastonbury (in the 2015 edition of the British mega-festival) and more recently, at Elrow London this summer. Curiously, he started his Elrow set with a remix from James Bond’s theme song. Can it get cooler than that?
Idris Elba, whose stage name varies between DJ Big Driis and Big Driis the Londoner, not only has performed in the festivals metioned above, as he also opened a concert of Madonna on Germany (at 2015 Madonna’s Rebel Heart Tour) and reportedly DJ’d (!) Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s Royal Wedding. Definitely got cooler.
And if that wasn’t enough, please bear attention to the fact that past July, the man started his own house music record label – 7Wallace Records, and before that, namely in March, he released an original solo track called “Bad Man”. He played Tomorrowland 2018 as well, at Potion Stage July 29th.
This week, Mr. Elba – OBE since 2016 – is on the spotlight for both his musical and acting craftsmanship. Even better: news tell us he had the chance to merge both of them, as Netflix announced that he will star in a new comedy series called Turn Up Charlie, playing the role of a “struggling DJ and eternal bachelor trying to get his life back on track”. The series is set to debut March 15. Here’s a picture of “Charlie” behind the decks.
The announcement comes in a time in which Elba was also confirmed to play at this year’s Coachella. He will make his debut in the world’s most known festival on April 13 and 20, alongside household names of the industry such as Childish Gambino, Ariana Grande or Tame Impala, among many others.

However, and still on the Coachella issue, “Big Driis” is not the only multitasked man to take it “to the desert”, as Virgil Abloh is also scheduled to perform at this year’s edition of the festival. You most likely know Virgil from his relation with Kanye West and the work he developed as a stylist and designer for Louis Vuitton and, of course, for creating Off-White in 2012, but yes, he also has a career on music – being a very praised hip-hop DJ and producer in the open hours.
Whether behind the screen or the decks, you’ve got to respect Idris Elba, as he works both shifts with sheer class. To wrap this article up, we also inform you that Idris Elba was recently chosen by People Magazine as 2018’s “Sexiest Man Alive“. Talk about a 2018…
