The 14th edition of the Neopop Electronic Music Festival once more took place in the city of Viana de Castelo, from 8 to 11 August, this year titled “Techno Capital”.
Figures such as Solomun, Jeff Mills, Joseph Capriati, Ricardo Villalobos, Marco Carola and Nina Kravitz made up this year’s lavish poster, among other names.
The festival surpassed the high expectations, dozens of artists who performed on both Neo Stage and Anti Stage stages, satisfied the public’s hunger. Anti Stage, between the wall of the fort and the containers of the shipyard, as it has been in previous years, was conservative, even in what matters to the sounds of the artists who have been there. The highlight not only of the Neo Stage but of the festival in general was the main stage, which was the responsibility of DubLab, which in addition to having greatly increased the visual part of the stage, brought with it, as indeed always makes a visual concept, with contents that dazzled the audience, enriching all the performances and that allied with the sound, provided all the elements so that more music, all the moments were authentic trips. This was a giant “detail” that elevates this festival even more, doing something that distinguishes it from those already existing in Portugal.
The first day of the festival, which was free of charge, was marked by the St. Germain concert on the main stage, with an alternative sonority comparing with the others, providing great moments, anticipated by the experienced Portuguese Rui Vargas and Ivan Smagghe in the Neo Stage. The Anti Stage on this day was an authentic marathon in which to national artists. Nuno Carneiro, Diana Oliveira, Freshkitos, Magazino, Tiago Fragateiro and the closing Frank Maurel, in a very underground style, they are the mirror of the best that exists for Portugal, in the electronic music industry, that lives an excellent moment.
On Thursday, on the main stage, a full day with a deeper sound, scratching several times in the house, except for the Ukrainian Nastia, and the colossus Ben Klock that closed the day, already morning. With two Portuguese to open, Switchdance and Trikk, always connected to Innervisions, solidly affirms himself as an international artist. One of the most anticipated names on that night was Solomun, with a beautiful performance, as well as the trio Agents of Time that energetically engulfed the audience with their live performance. At the Anti Stage, the DJ Nobu is one of the pioneers of electronic music, with Tijana T and the clasp.
The third day that also started with two Portuguese, Cardia, in a very melodic way, that is characteristic of him and with Maestro Gusta-vo who acted until nightfall. Coming soon, the explosive back to back, Paula Temple and Rebekah. Next came very strong names with Joseph Capriati, Jeff Mills with his Detroit techno, Len Faki and Ricardo Villalobos, with the exception that the latter closed with the song “Grândola, Vila Morena” by Zeca Afonso, a true national anthem, intoned and eternally linked to the Portuguese revolution, synonymous with freedom. Already by Anti Stage they shone Anna Haleta and Zadig b2b Marcelus among other artists.
The last day came and I got names like the female icon of the industry, the energetic Nina Kravitz, the experienced Josh Wink, KiNK, and in charge of making the great closing on the main stage, the giant Marco Carola that in fact already would have another year. While Carola left the stage in the Anti Stage, Dax J continued from everything, where it acted until near the 13h. Lewis Fautzi, of the new generation of Portuguese artists as well as Fjaak were featured on that stage, among others.
Every year, at the end of the festival, the thinking of the vast majority is public: “this year was brutal!” Or “this was the best edition ever.” It is well known that this organization does not hesitate, impetuously justifying the following words when asked about the possibility of being the best edition: “we always work to be the best, we always work with this perspective, with the will to always do the best edition “- Raul Duro (01.08.2017 in an interview with SIC).
Aspects related to the safety and well-being of the public as well as organization, at the entrance and waiting queues to purchase tokens and drinks or food, feedback is quite positive once again. Overcoming the expectations when it was apparently difficult only reaffirms the position that this festival is the best electronic music festival in Portugal
Following this previous ideology on the part of the organization, the best edition of Neopop ever will be for years, so do not miss it, see you there.
